MassEquality Statement on President Trump’s Refusal to Condemn White Supremacy

President Donald Trump refused to condemn white supremacy during Tuesday’s Presidential Debate. In fact, the President told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by” on national television. Gavin McInnes, the founder, and former chairman of the Proud Boys, understood the president’s request was a call to action against Antifa.
Members of the Proud Boys were the organizers of the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017 and have been recognized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Members of this group were also responsible for the 2019 Straight Pride Parade in Boston.
It is abhorrent that the leader of our nation encouraged the members of this organization on Tuesday. It was abhorrent in 2017 when he stated, in the wake of the Charlottesville rally, that there were “very fine people on both sides”. It is abhorrent not to condemn white supremacy in all its forms.
MassEquality emphatically condemns white supremacy. Our mission of equality in the Commonwealth means that we stand with those who reject white supremacy. We call on you to make it known that you condemn intolerance in all its forms by exercising your right to vote this November. America deserves leadership that will stand against transphobic, homophobic, misogynistic, white supremacists and stand up for all the people of the United States.
