MassEquality Applauds U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision Establishing a Constitutional Right for Same-Sex Couples to Marry
BOSTON — June 26, 2015 — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that marriage equality for same-sex couples is a constitutional right, thus guaranteeing that same-sex couples in 13 states without equal rights will now be able to marry. MassEquality board chair Robyn Ochs made the following comment in response:
“This is a historic day in our country and we applaud the U.S. Supreme Court for ruling on the right side of history. Thousands of same-sex couples across the nation now have the satisfaction of knowing that their relationships are acknowledged both statewide and nationally. This is a monumental victory for LGBTQ equality and we look forward to celebrating these marriages. As one of the leaders in the successful fight for marriage equality in Massachusetts, we are incredibly proud of this great accomplishment and look forward to seeing the nation finally take another significant step forward for inclusivity and acceptance. Our work is far from done. We will continue the fight for fully lived equality for every LGBTQ person in this state and this nation as we address a range of issues, from socioeconomic and healthcare disparities faced by communities of color to providing access to vital services for those living with HIV/AIDS to protecting the rights of transgender people to ensuring that every LGBTQ person — from young people to the elderly — is treated equally everywhere in the Commonwealth and the United States.”
