MassEquality to Counter Protest in Support of Drag Queen Story Hour

Boxford, MA: This afternoon at 4PM, the Boxford Town Library is hosting a Drag Queen Story Hour for children of all ages to listen, learn, play, and be exposed to positive, unapologetically queer role models. Although the library has received overwhelmingly positive feedback and excitement for the event, a group of hateful conservatives have been conspiring to shut it down. Up to this point, their complaints and demands for the event to be canceled have failed. Now they are planning to protest outside the event, putting the safety and comfort of the performer as well as the children and families who plan to attend at risk.

This is merely the latest in a series of attacks against LGBTQ+ inclusion for youth in Massachusetts. For some time, this small but active group of conservatives has been mounting a campaign to dictate who deserves to be seen and respected. At MassEquality, we are fighting back to defend everyone’s right to be celebrated exactly as they are, but we can’t do it alone. We need your help!

Starting at 3PM today, June 15th, we will be gathering outside Second Congregational Church Hall at 173 Washington Street in Boxford for a peaceful counter-protest.

“MassEquality will not stand idly by while members of our community are targeted and we are painted as predators and we will certainly not allow protesters to scare children away from having the opportunity to have a storybook read to them” said Executive Director, Tanya Neslusan, “We hope to ensure that the families in attendance are able to enjoy the day without their experience tainted with hate.  We appreciate that the library has not buckled under the pressure of these homophobic attacks in order to ensure that this is a positive experience for everyone in attendance.”
