Standing Against Hate: MassEquality Responds to Attack on Transgender Memorial

This week, as we prepared to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance, a memorial on Boston Common was deliberately destroyed by unknown individuals. The display consisted of 425 transgender flags, each representing a transgender person whose life was taken by violence since 2020. Organized by The Queer Neighborhood Council, the memorial was created to honor those we have lost and to bring urgent attention to the threats and discrimination transgender people continue to face.

MassEquality condemns this act of hate in the strongest possible terms. The destruction of this memorial is not only an attack on a powerful symbol of remembrance, but also an attack on the dignity, safety, and humanity of transgender people across our Commonwealth.

At a time when transgender communities are facing escalating rhetoric, harassment, and violence, acts like this attempt to intimidate and silence. They will not succeed. We stand firmly with our transgender neighbors, advocates, and community leaders, and we remain committed to building a Massachusetts where every LGBTQ+ person can live openly, safely, and free from fear.
