Statement in Support of Giselle Byrd

Recently a transgender appointee to the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women (MCSW), was subject to hateful attacks and backlash after some anti transgender news and social media outlets circulated information about her appointment in an attempt to defame her character.

Mass Equality proudly extends its strong support for Giselle Byrd who was appointed to the MCSW in August 2025 and now serves as the Vice Chair of Programs and Planning.

Every woman’s journey is unique. The struggles and triumphs of all women need to be recognized so the Commission can fully understand the diverse and evolving needs of women across the Commonwealth. The MCSW plays a vital role as a state agency dedicated to advancing equality, strengthening opportunity, and promoting the rights of women in Massachusetts. While some issues that are faced by the transgender community are unique, many of the challenges faced by cisgender women are also faced by transgender women, whose experiences and voices are essential to any comprehensive effort toward equity.

Mass Equality acknowledges that Giselle Byrd brings invaluable insight, lived experience, and a steadfast commitment to uplifting all women, including transgender women whose needs are too often overlooked. Her leadership, her clarity of purpose, and her dedication to inclusive program development make her an exceptional advocate within the Commission and a powerful ally to communities across the state.

We applaud Giselle’s service and look forward to her continued contributions toward building a Massachusetts where every woman, of every background, has the opportunity to thrive.
